Lifter Puller

I headed out to Minneapolis last week for the annual D4’th of July event hosted by Dillinger Four at the Triple Rock and this year featuring a secret one-off reunion show by Lifter Puller. I quickly snapped the photo below after their only practice before the gig. The rest of the practice photos can be seen on this page and the event photos of all the bands including Tim Barry and Against Me! can be found on my Flickr album page.

J. Roddy Walston & The Business

I pick and choose my concert photography nights more than ever but one band I will always be there for is J. Roddy Walston & The Business. The first time I met them was in 2008. I initially heard them via the late, great radio station WOXY.com (97X The Future of Rock’n’Roll). I got word they were playing a tiny bar in Charlottesville (Miller’s) that is legendary for being the start of Dave Matthews’ career. I know for a fact my wife Polly & I were the only two people in the bar solely to see J.Roddy as we sat amongst the usual day-drinkers and regulars. As the band tells the story, they may have accepted the gig based on the fact (or the misunderstanding of) that it was the start of the Dave Matthews’ BAND’s history, not just Dave being a bartender there as the band formed. Long story short, J.Roddy & The Business were told, after two songs, “turn down or leave”. As the bass player at the time (Zach) told me on the way out, “We don’t turn down for anyone.” They packed up and left, unpaid and probably hungry too. It was so rock’n’roll. Time machine to last night and here are my photos from the show with about 500 fans at the Jefferson Theater which is ironically located about 100 yards from Miller’s :: J. The Replacements

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to be granted permission to shoot the The Replacements / Hold Steady / Deer Tick show in New York City at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium. Although I got some good close-up shots from inside the security barrier at the front of the stage, the photo below is one of my favorites from the night just because of the sheer scale of it. The entire set of 33 photos can be found by clicking on my Flickr link.
