Cville Niche was kind of enough to do a “check-in” piece with me this week in advance of the “Moonlight Silhouettes” opening :: Cville Niche full article.
“Moonlight Silhouettes” is a series of twelve photographs presenting a creative collaboration that I did with Stephanie Helvin and Mallory Paige of Moonlight Circus. Four of the photographs incorporate a lenticular printing method while eight are printed on aluminum with a high gloss finish. The lenticular printing method was selected to convey the movement and grace of the aerialists while the metal prints simply capture a single paused moment in their act. I am honored to have been invited to show these pieces at The Garage is located at 250 1st St N, Charlottesville VA.
Batesville Market, the coolest country store in all of Virginia is back in business and they are hosting an exhibit of 16 of my photographs. When they invited me to do the show I took a cue from the new Batesville Market t-shirts with the “LOCAL” logo emblazoned on the front and decided to tailor the theme around my favorite recent portraits of local musicians, performers and friends. There will be a small, informal First Fridays opening from 4-6pm on January 2nd and the photographs will be up in the store throughout the month of January. Do yourself a favor and get out of town for a couple hours, enjoy the scenic drive into the country and grab one of their delicious fried bologna sandwiches and some homemade mac ‘n’ cheese!
I am honored to be a part of the 2013 Let There Be Light exhibit on the grounds of the Earl Dickinson Fine Arts Building. The date is Friday, December 13th from 6-9pm (rain moves it one day). Admission is free as are the glow-in-the-dark maps to the displays of all 18 participating artists. I will be showing seven new portraits in the Hoop Dreams photo series that combine dance, human interaction and light painting. Unique transparent printing methods specifically developed for Let There Be Light will make the subjects come to life in a luminous glow. Also, I will have a Hoop Dreams projection video with a soundtrack featuring LCD Soundsystem, Beastie Boys, Modest Mouse and Young MC.
At some point recently I decided the world needs less cat videos and more self-carving sword-swallowing pumpkin videos. So, Brian Wimer and I shot this with the stunning, talented and creative Opal Lechmanski. I edited this short piece together with music by The Hogwaller Ramblers.
This month Installation Magazine is featuring my brother Rob on the cover and with an extensive interview. The magazine is available in digital format only (via iTunes) and this is the two-minute edit of the 55 second “cover video” the magazine used. Filmed with Brian Wimer in Rob’s basement studio, this piece gives you a “behind the scenes” look at his smoke painting technique.
